ABSTRACT
The use of authentic materials has gained increasing attention in English Language Teaching (ELT) due to their potential to bridge classroom learning and real-life language use. Authentic materials refer to texts and media created for real communicative purposes rather than pedagogical objectives, such as newspapers, videos, advertisements, songs, and online content. This study aims to systematically review existing research on the use of authentic materials in English teaching, focusing on the types of authentic materials employed, their benefits for students’ language development, and the challenges faced by teachers in implementing them.
This research adopted a qualitative approach using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method guided by the PRISMA framework. Relevant studies published within the last ten years were collected from reputable academic databases and analyzed thematically. The review focused on studies conducted in the Indonesian EFL context to provide a contextualized understanding of authentic material use across the four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as language components such as vocabulary and grammar.
The findings reveal that a wide range of authentic materials, including printed texts, audio, visual, and audio-visual resources, are commonly used in English classrooms. The use of authentic materials offers several benefits, such as enhancing students’ motivation, improving communicative competence, increasing cultural awareness, and providing exposure to real-life language use. However, the review also identifies several challenges, including students’ limited vocabulary, inappropriate material difficulty, limited access to resources and technology, time constraints, and teachers’ lack of training in selecting and adapting authentic materials.
In conclusion, despite the challenges, authentic materials play a significant role in creating meaningful, engaging, and contextually relevant English learning experiences. This study suggests that with careful selection, adaptation, and teacher support, authentic materials can effectively enhance English language teaching in Indonesian EFL classrooms. The findings are expected to contribute to educators, curriculum developers, and future researchers in optimizing the integration of authentic materials in ELT.
