Mediaistana.com. Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, August 6, 2026. – A notable achievement has been attained by Yakob Metboki, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D., a distinguished scholar from South Central Timor Regency (TTS) and faculty member at Artha Wacana Christian University (UKAW) Kupang. One week following his return to Kupang after the completion of doctoral studies in Thailand, Dr. Metboki was announced to have successfully passed both the administrative screening and interview phases for the UB Fellows Program 2026–2027, an international leadership initiative sponsored by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA).
The United Board is an international organization dedicated to advancing the quality of Christian higher education in Asia through leadership development, institutional innovation, and regional collaboration. For UKAW, the United Board has served as a strategic international partner since 1995, supporting institutional development through faculty capacity building, leadership enhancement, institutional grants, and academic networking.
The UB Fellows Program is scheduled from January 2026 to July 2027. The program comprises several components: the Summer Leadership Institute in Singapore, a Webinar Series, an Asia Placement in the fellow’s selected country, a Study Trip to Japan, and will conclude with the Final Leadership Seminar in Thailand. The program is designed to cultivate higher education leaders capable of addressing global challenges through transnational collaboration, innovation, and service-oriented leadership.
According to Dr. Metboki, the fellowship broadens scholarly perspectives on the role of higher education amid contemporary challenges, including the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), socio-economic transformation, declining public trust in institutions, and the imperative for universities to generate tangible societal impact.
“This program emphasizes that leadership extends beyond institutional administration to encompass the development of collaborative frameworks that generate solutions for society. The international networks established through this fellowship will serve as a foundation for strengthening education, research, community engagement, and strategic partnerships in East Nusa Tenggara,” He stated.
Other things, Dr. Metboki’s selection also holds strategic significance for Artha Wacana Christian University in advancing the implementation of Main Performance Indicator 6: World-Class Partnerships.
Through this fellowship, UKAW will further expand its institutional linkages with universities, government agencies, industry, national and multinational corporations, research institutions, and international nonprofit organizations. These collaborations create opportunities for joint initiatives, including student internships, rural empowerment projects, the integration of practitioner-lecturers into academic programs, collaborative research, faculty and student exchange, and co-development of curricula aligned with workforce and societal needs.
To be known, Dr. Metboki further underscored that the paradigm of university partnerships has shifted. The effectiveness of collaboration is no longer assessed solely by the number of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed, but rather by concrete implementation, measurable outputs, outcomes, and the direct benefits experienced by all stakeholders. Synergy among academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations is therefore essential to enhancing the quality of higher education and fostering impactful innovation.
This achievement is expected to serve as an inspiration to the younger generation of South Central Timor and East Nusa Tenggara, demonstrating that geographical constraints are not an impediment to international academic recognition. For Dr. Metboki, this milestone represents not only a personal accomplishment but also a responsibility to strengthen UKAW’s global network and to promote collaborative initiatives that contribute to the advancement of a more qualified, innovative, and sustainable higher education system in Indonesia.**
