Mediaistana.com – Jumat 3 juli 2026 Tangerang City – A number of street vendors (PKL) operating in the GOR Gondrong area of Tangerang City have appealed to the government for legal protection and a greater sense of security. According to one vendor, who requested anonymity, many traders claim they have been subjected to alleged illegal levies (extortion) and are afraid to report the matter due to concerns about pressure or intimidation.
In a WhatsApp message sent to members of the media on Friday (July 3, 2026), the source stated that several vendors had received WhatsApp calls from an individual whom they alleged was involved in the suspected extortion. The source further claimed that during those conversations, the individual allegedly made disparaging remarks about the vendors and demanded that they hand over payment receipts as evidence.
According to the source, these circumstances have left many vendors fearful of providing statements or filing complaints with law enforcement authorities, worrying that they could face pressure or intimidation if their identities became known.
Amid these concerns, the vendors conveyed a heartfelt appeal to the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
“Mr. President Prabowo Subianto, please hear the voices of us, the street vendors, who struggle every day to earn a living and support our families. We sincerely ask the government to provide protection and justice for ordinary citizens. If there are indeed allegations of illegal levies or intimidation against vendors, we hope the matter will be handled professionally and in accordance with the law. We only wish to conduct our businesses safely, work in peace, and provide for our families without fear.”
The vendors also expressed hope that the National Police Chief, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief, and the Internal Affairs Division (Propam) of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police would pay attention to their concerns and ensure that every citizen wishing to submit a complaint receives professional service and adequate protection as a complainant or witness.
